Officers responded to the 13000 block of Coppermine Road in McNair, up the road from Dulles Airport, around 3:30 p.m. on reports of shots fired, police said.

There, officers learned three young people who knew each other had gotten into a physical fight, Deputy Chief Brooke Wright said.
After they separated, the gunman fired off at least three rounds, hitting one teen, who was killed, and missing another teen victim who was shot at, police said.
The suspect was believed to have fled to nearby Coates Elementary School, which was secured as authorities looked for the gunman.
A search for the suspect was under way in the evening.
